The only time it's okay to have too much hot air

Summertime is one of my favorite times of year, not only because it's more acceptable to drink beer outside, but also because there's so much more to do! I get bored just sitting at home and watching tv and I always like to have a plan, so summertime is perfect for me because I can enjoy all the festivals and activities going on (as long as I remember when they happen).

There are certain events that happen every year that I seem to forget about until I see everyone and their mother checking in to on social media. One of those is the Fruit Beer Festival, which we went to a few weeks ago, and the other is the Hot Air Balloon Festival. Each year, a few towns over hosts a Hot Air Balloon festival. Like any other festival there's always your carni-food and rides, but this one also has hot air balloons to ride in, or just walk around and take pictures of (which is my preference since I'm also afraid of heights). I have memories of my father and I going to a festival like this in NY when I was younger, so it's fun to experience this now and be able to remember it a bit more vividly.

I'm not sure what I was expecting the first time we decided to stop by. In my picture taking brain, I figured you either wanted to be there at sunrise or after sunset, because those times would make the best pictures of these huge balloons floating through the air. Well apparently, that's not really how it works. So you can imagine my disappointment when I realized that if you go at night, they don't really fill up with hot air and fly away. I mean they do fill up with hot air and make amazing pictures, but they do that while being tied down with lots of large ropes. So I guess my fear dream of floating off into the night sky in one of these beauties will have to wait for a different opportunity.

Another disappointment came when they actually don't stay filled for long after dark. Anxious festival goers like myself stand around and stare at the balloon operators (I think that's what you'd call them) until they decide it's time to fill their balloon . . . usually far before sunset. This results in only having enough gasoline to keep the balloons filled for so long. And that so long just happens to be about 3 minutes after the pictures start getting really really good, if you're curious.

Either way, the views and beauty of these balloons is awesome. I'm sure there are festivals like this all over the country, and if you have one near you, I definitely recommend attending! So what other awesome summer festivals or activities should I make sure to pencil in to my calendar? What are your favorite summer attractions?

  2. I have a childhood obsession with hot air balloons... I used to go to a festival every spring with my dad that had hot air balloons! I absolutely loved it! And now I get all giddy when I see one in the air! I'm so jealous you got to go, even if they don't fly at night (who knew!) Pretty pictures!

  3. That's too funny that you went to hot air balloon festival. We had one in our town this weekend. I didn't attend, but I have before and they are really fun to see. You got some great pictures, even though they weren't up for too long.

  4. What a fun festival! Although, I don't think I'd ever go up in one of those. They are so pretty to look at though, especially the pictures once the sun had gone down. You are right, the best festivals are in summer. It seems like we have one every weekend here. I need to make a better effort to keep track of them and go!

  10. I went to the morning launch when I was in town last year and it was amazing! I've been keeping an eye out for one where I live, but I think they happen farther south away from the mountains. =( I guess I'll just have to get back to Oregon for next year's festival.
