Health, Love & Fire: February 2014

Yay It's Friday!

Friday, February 28, 2014

This week has been such an excruciatingly long one for this girl right here! With three night meetings and never getting home earlier than 7 any night this week, plus the planning and to do lists to get ready to go out of town, I couldn’t be happier that it’s Friday. So since I am so thrilled that we’ve finally gotten to this day of the week, I decided to jump on the bandwagon and give you some of the five highlights of my week!

One:
If you haven’t been around here much or have just tuned out my bragging, I am super thrilled to be leaving on vacation with my husband for 9 days starting tomorrow morning! We have been planning this trip for about 7 months and it is a trip we have talked about for 7 years. It’s one of the things on our “must do before kids” bucket list. Now I’m not saying that the minute we get back we will start “trying”, but I’m excited to be doing some of the things we’ve dreamed of!

Two:
Last weekend, I experienced one of those moments that took my breath away. There are very few times I have been prouder to be married to my husband. Saturday was his annual Fire Department Sweethearts Banquet. Once a year, the department gets dressed up, thanks all the spouses, and hands out the awards for the past year. This is the 8th year I’ve been lucky enough to accompany Dan to this event, and each year I watch, as he’s disappointed when other people receive all of the awards. He has been part of the department for 12 years, and has yet to received any awards. He is the quiet one, the one who doesn’t boast about himself, and the one who goes to work day after day and just does his job because it’s what he loves. I know that he didn’t become a firefighter for the awards or for the accolades, but watching his face light up, hearing him thank me for the sacrifices we’ve made, watching him tear up and thank his dad, and seeing everyone standing and congratulating him was the most amazing moment. He was tuned out, not even paying attention when the chief got up to announce the last award of the night, so sure that he would never be picked. As soon as the chief starting describing the person he had chosen, I knew that it was Dan. It’s one thing for me to be proud of my husband, and another thing for the Chief to acknowledge all his hard work when he could have picked any other person in the entire department. I am so proud to be his wife and so excited for him!

Dan with the other three guys on his shift!

Three:
Not only do we get to go on a cruise and check off one of the many things on our bucket list together, but we also go tickets to see my favorite baseball team at spring training while we are in Florida!! Bring on Braves baseball and cute boys in tight pants!

Four:
Last night was our kickoff for the Relay For Life event that I am involved in.  Even after I left my last job where I was their staff partner, I loved the volunteers I worked with and the mission I just had to get involved and volunteer! I have an upcoming post planned in the next couple weeks about volunteering and why I get involved, but I was excited that we have kicked off this year and are raising money for a great cause.

Five:
I’m excited that I actually got four posts scheduled for next week while I’ll be gone enjoying the sunshine. Get ready for vacation disasters, facing my fears, and a little takeover by the one and only Cooper.

I hope everyone has an amazing week and enjoys some of the posts I have scheduled! I can’t wait to get back and tell you all about it!

Workouts, Suntanning and Pinterest Obsessions

Thursday, February 27, 2014

The last few months I have been in some sort of fog and haven’t been setting goals or accomplishing as much as I would like. S, with the start of a new month, getting my new planner in the mail (better late than never, right?) and my love for lists . . . I decided to make a list of goals for this month! Let's see what I can accomplish during the month of March!

. . . . Enjoy my vacation with Dan! – This is a no brainer, but I am really hoping that I can enjoy the 10 days away from work, read a book, get a tan, and forget about all the things stressing me out at the office! (oh and maybe consume a few margaritas while I'm at it)

. . . . Workout More – Isn’t this a goal every month? I actually signed up for 10 weeks with a personal trainer with my coworker, so hopefully having two people to keep me accountable will help get me to the gym more often! (I've already been to two sessions, and am packing my workout clothes for my trip, we will see if they get used)

. . . . Train for my half marathon – This is sort of similar to the working out more, but I REALLY need to start running if I’m going to be able to run and not kill myself for the half marathon in May.

. . . . Complete 3 projects from pinterest – I have a problem with drooling (or maybe just eyeing) tons of fun new projects on pinterest on a daily basis, some that I will even go buy all the materials for! Hopefully this month I can tackle and complete some of my latest obsessions! Please tell me I'm not the only one who does this!

. . . . Plan Amy’s party – Our best friends are pregnant with Twins and I am hosting a small gender reveal party in April, so I want to get some of the decorations done with in March so I don’t have to do it all last minute!

This could be a lot to tackle seeing as I will be on vacation for ¼ of the month, but at least my vacation is on my To Do list! What are some of your March goals?

Every Mile A Memory . . .

Wednesday, February 26, 2014

Since starting my blog, I have mentioned a few times that my husband and I like to run. In the past few years Dan has run two marathons, we have both completed a 200 mile relay race called Hood to Coast and we have completed a total of 8 half marathons. As our love for running increases, so do the number of running medals we have draped around a picture frame or laying on a shelf. Let's be honest, I don't go out there and run 13.1 miles on a saturday just for the fun of it . . . it's all about the medal! I know that might not be the best motivation, I mean the sense of accomplishment at the end is awesome, and the glass of wine or cold beer always helps, but both Dan and I always look forward to that medal!

Since we have over 15 race medals laying around, I decided that we needed somewhere to organize and show them all off. What's the point of having them if we can't look at them! I did some searching on etsy, but just couldn't get myself to spend anywhere from 20-70 dollars on something that I just sort of liked. So after browsing pinterest and dragging my husband to the craft store, I decided to make my own!

Here was my inspiration . . . . .

And here's what I ended up with . . .

What I needed. . . .
One 1x4 piece of wood, whatever desired length you want, either spray paint or a small can of paint in the color you're wanting, a roll of vinyl that you can use in your cricut, silhouette or other cutting machine, drawer handles to use to hang the medals from (I just picked up some normal handles you would use on a cabinet or dresser), and nails and picture hooks to hang it from the wall.

All I did . . .
. . . measure out how long I wanted my board to be and cut it to size
. . . Spray painted the board black (I figured this color would go with whatever room I decided I wanted it in)
. . . Picked a saying and cut the letters out using my Cricut, and then stuck them on the board once it was dry
. . . Measured, marked, and screwed in the handles on the board to hang the medals from
. . . I measured how far apart the holes were on my race bibs and nailed nails in to each side to hold our bibs (not all the bibs had the same distance holes, so for some of them I had to hole punch an extra hole in order for them all to hang right)
. . . .Attached the picture hooks to the back of the board and then hung the holder from the wall & hung the medals from the handles!

I absolutely loved the way it turned out and it has been the perfect place to display all the fun medals from the different races we've done! Hopefully finishing this project and being so happy with the outcome will motivate me to get more pinterest projects done!

Spring Into Spring

Monday, February 24, 2014

I don’t know about you, but wintertime in Oregon is pretty gloomy. It rains from November until sometimes as late as June. And while it makes the argument to my husband for a pair of Hunter Boots not so difficult, I get sick of rain jackets and frizzy hair for that long! This year has been dryer than normal, but I still find myself dreaming of warmer days, sunshine and flowers! So as I’m sitting here day dreaming I thought, what better way to get in the spring mood than with a giveaway! The first day of spring is officially March 20th, so this is perfect timing to win some new spring accessories and a gift card for spring clothes to go with them!

I teamed up with some amazing other ladies to bring you some fun new items to help you spring into spring! We will be giving away four great prizes - A $30 gift card to the store of your choosing to pick out new clothes from their spring line, a mint green floral necklace, mint druzy inspired glittery stud earrings from PenelopeLily, and a canvas clutch with floral embellishment.

My Husband Has His Own Language

Thursday, February 20, 2014

I love the idea behind this linkup, and while this is only my second time doing it, I am already driving  my husband nuts making him rack his brain for answers to these questions after getting off a 24 hour shift. Sorry honey, its for the blog. #sorryimnotsorry Any chance I get to talk about my husband and some of the goofy things he says I am always excited. Just take yesterday for example, I was feeling really frustrated with some projects I have been working on at work that keep falling through. He was doing his best to make me feel better, but some of the phrases he was using would only make sense if you understood his language. Here's what he had to say to cheer me up, along with my interpretation of what he actually meant.

"You beat the cow" -  I believe he means, you can't beat a dead horse
"You lead the hours to the troth to drink but it doesn't want to" - meaning you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink.

These are kinds of things that make my day, lighten my mood, and make me love him that much more! It would be boring if he was never goofy or didn't make me laugh all the time, so I expected nothing less when asking him the questions for this months link-up. Here's what he had to say!

1. If you could live anywhere, where would you live?
Like for the rest of my life? Somewhere hot and tropical, probably the Caribbean somewhere. People also say it can get boring there, but I like the beach. But I like snow . . . I don't know, that's a hard question.

2. Sand or Snow?
Sand . . . I like the hotness.

3. What winter olympics sport would you rock at?
A sweeper in curling. The look really intense. Or the curler, the guy who throws the rock down. Unless this means I get ultimate powers, then I'd change my answer.

4. You're cooking a romantic dinner - what's your go-to dish?
Either a good pasta dish or a nice filet mignon.

5. This year I gave my wife __________ for Valentines Day?
Flowers, a nice card, chocolates (some she didn't like), and a picture of us on the beach since we will be there in a couple weeks.

Boys Behind The Blog

Friends, Sweatpants, and Justin Timberlake: I'm the kind of girl who . . .

Wednesday, February 19, 2014

When I saw this linkup on Holly's blog this morning and then some of my favorite ladies like Whitney posted too, I knew I had to join in. Cause I mean, we're bloggers, so don't we all love to learn a little more about our favorite writers? So here goes . . .

This is of me and coop when he was just a baby

...obviously loves her dog (and cats too but they rarely make an appearance on here)

...is a planner but deep down loves nights at home on the couch, in my sweatpants, cuddling with Dan and Coop even more (and a glass of wine makes it even better!)

...can watch every episode of friends and never get sick of it (sorry Dan)

...is overly emotional . . .basically I’m a crier and it seems to be getting worse with age. Lord help me (but mostly Dan) when I have kids

...is starting to get baby fever (eek)

...day dreams about becoming Mindy Wiess and planning these extravagant parties with someone else’s budget!

...is constantly thinking up new projects or honey-do lists for our house

....at the same time that she loves to tackle new projects, finds going to lowes or home depot exhausting

...will always be an 'Nsync and Justin Timberlake fan

...loves getting snail mail

...gets more excited to buy gifts for other people than to get my own

...makes lists for everything and is overjoyed when I get to check things off. Sometimes I even put things on the list that I just completed just so I can check them off!

...dreams of living in a rustic farmhouse with lots of land for puppies to run around, a garden to grow, and a large barn to be built for horses and chickens

...can always watch a good chick flick or

...hopes and dreams to grow this blog, make new friends, and be around this page for a long time!

Walmart Bingo

So you're bored on a Friday night, live within 30 miles of a Walmart, and have friends or family who like to have a good time. . . . this is the perfect game for you!

Rules:
- Print off two copies of the same bingo card (you can find different versions on pinterest, make your own, or go to this website to generate randomized bingo cards of your own!

- Split up in to two teams (leaving one person to roam the store as the official)

- Take pictures on your phone without getting caught of the bingo space in action

- Whichever team gets a bingo first by getting to the official and proving the spaces in photos wins I'll leave it up to you to choose the prize, but anything with camo or cheap beer work great.

Here are some of the fabulous pictures you'll end up with!

Woman wearing Pajamas - This entire outfit was fleece!

Entire family in Camo - (the other team thought it was fair to just have their team members dress up and take pictures)

Kids Riding Bikes: We couldn't find any kids riding bikes, so we opted to doing it ourselves - We even tried placing bikes throughout the toys section with the hope that a kid would walk by and want to try it out #walmartbingofail

You may also end up with text messages like this from "the official"

Note: Do not go to Walmart to play this game early in the day on a weekday, you will be left feeling disappointed that the only customers are all over the age of 70 and the outfits/purchases/laughs are not as entertaining! (Consider yourself warned)

Happy Bingo Hunting!
